NBEA Scholarship and Professional Development Opportunities

Below is information regarding teacher scholarships and first-time national conference attendee stipends for members of NBEA.  These are just two of the many benefits of membership to your national business association, NBEA.  Please note the two deadlinesYou must be a member of NBEA to be eligible.


NBEA Scholarship Program
Two, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to individuals pursuing continuing education or graduate study in business education.  The NBEA Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to outstanding individuals for the purpose of continuing their study and professional development in business education.  You can access the information and Scholarship Application online at: http://www.nbea.org/newsite/conferences/convention/documents/2011ScholarshipApplication_000.pdf
Application forms should be completed and sent to the NBEA office, postmarked no later than December 1. 

To be eligible for an NBEA scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Be enrolled in a college or university postbaccalaureate or graduate-level program and submit proof of enrollment.

  • Be enrolled in a business education program and/or other related areas in business.

  • Submit proof of completion of at least two graduate courses (six semester hours).

  • Submit a one-page letter describing (a) past contributions to the field of business education, (b) plans to utilize the degree in the future, (c) two or three significant issues in business education, and (d) why the applicant should be the recipient of the award.

  • Submit a current resume.

  • Submit two letters of recommendation attesting to the scholarship/leadership potential of the applicant.

  • Be currently teaching and plan to continue to teach in the field of business education.

  • Be a current professional member of NBEA at the time of application (a minimum of one full year of NBEA membership is required).

 

Professional Development Partnership Program for NBEA Convention First-Time Attendees ($200 Stipend)

If you are a professional member of NBEA and have never attended the annual national convention, you are eligible for a professional development stipend.  The $200 stipends will be presented during the Awards Luncheon at the NBEA Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, April 22. Winners must register for the luncheon where they will receive the stipend from NBEA President Madge L. Gregg on behalf of the regional or corporate sponsor.   You can access the information and Professional Development Stipend Application Form online at:

The deadline for applications is January 4.

VBEA Awards

The following awards and recognitions were presented at the 2011 VBEA Awards and Recognition Brunch: 

  • First-Time Attendee Stipends of $50 were presented by President Shellie Hartley to:

  • VBEA Professional Scholarships were announced by Judy Sams.  Three $750 scholarships were given for graduate study and presented to Yvonne Mullins, Chesterfield County Public Schools; Charisse Woodward, Frederick County Public Schools; and Katharine Sargent, Virginia Beach Public Schools.

  • VBEA Great Ideas Awards of $50 were presented by Glenna Hensdill to winners who wrote lesson plans relating to this year’s theme, Incorporating Virginia Wizard Into Classroom Instruction.”  The winners include Karen Carrier, Eastern Montgomery High School, for "Make a Magical Future with Virginia Wizard"; Judy Musick, Waynesboro High School, for "Choosing a Career in the 21st Century"; and Betsy Waskey, William Byrd High School in Vinton, VA, for "Budgeting for Life after High School."

  •  Outstanding New Business and Information Technology Teacher Award was presented to Glenn Starnes II, John Marshall High School, Richmond City Public Schools. Glenn also won an IPad in a contest sponsored at the conference by Genworth Financial for innovative ways to incorporate technology into classroom instruction.

  • Al Roane Middle School Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Helene Safford, Longfellow Middle School, Fairfax County Public Schools. She received a plaque and a cash award sponsored by Cengage Learning.

  • The Walter L. Shell Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Janet Kreider from First Colonial High School by Robin Albrecht, VBEA Special Recognitions Chair.  

  • Distinguished Service Award was presented to The Griffith Foundation and Director Jason Terrell were recognized for sponsorship of the Insurance Education Institute for Virginia teachers for the last 5 years.

The VBEA Carl Jorgenson student scholarships were awarded at the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Reston in April to Demple Soni, Gregory Smith, and Kaushil Patel.

SBEA Awards and Recognition

LaVerne Vines, Petersburg City Public Schools, was awarded the 2011 Middle School Teacher of the Year Award at the Southern Business Education Association (SBEA) conference for her outstanding contributions to middle school instruction while she was in Richmond City Public Schools.  Judy Sams was awarded the 2011 Supervisor of the Year Award from SBEA.  Both awards were presented during the SBEA Awards Luncheon on Friday, October 21, 2011, at the Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, Florida. 

Robin Albreacht, Osbourn High School was elected SBEA Secretary.
